Monero is a top privacy-centric cryptocurrency that ranks high in market capitalization. It’s unique because its algorithm resists ASIC miners, allowing everyday users with ordinary CPUs or GPUs to mine. Monero Mining Monero could be worthwhile thanks to its resistance to ASIC miners. This feature enables anyone with a standard CPU or GPU to participate in the mining process.

This guide will provide you with the necessary software and instructions on setting it up, enabling you to start mining Monero in no time.

    How to Mine Monero

Below is a summary of methods and software for mining Monero:

    AMD Cards

    • XMR Stak has a 2% development fee, unless you compile the software yourself.
    • Wolf's Miner doesn't have a development fee, but it’s not as efficient.

    nVidia Cards

    • XMR Stak has a 2% development fee, unless you compile the software yourself.
    • CC Miner

    CPU’s (Intel/AMD)

    • XMR Stak
    • Wolfs Miner

    Install Mining Software

XMR Stak’s latest update simplifies the process, offering a single installer for various hardware types. This guide turns to XMR Stak due to its reliable performance and ease of use.

XMR Stak can be downloaded at this link. Be aware that some antivirus programs may flag mining software as malware. Ensure you download from verified sources for safety.

Setting up XMR Stak is straightforward with the latest version. We’re focusing on Windows users here, but options for Linux and MacOS exist too. Just download, unzip, and run the program.

    Join Mining Pool

Once installed, the application asks if you’re mining Monero or Aeon. Choose Monero and then input the pool address. Joining a quality mining pool is crucial because solo mining often offers minimal returns without high hashrates. Pools charge small fees but are a consistent income source. Consider these Monero mining pools:

    MineXMR

    • Servers in: France, Germany, Canada
    • 1% Pool Fee
    • 25,000 Connected Users
    • 0.5XMR Minimum Payout

    Moneropool

    • 0.5XMR Minimum Payout

    Nanopool

    • Servers in: Europe (2), US East, US West, Asia
    • 1% pool fee with a payout commission of 0.015XMR
    • 5000 Connected Users
    • 1XMR Minimum Payout

    Dwarfpool

    • Servers in: Europe, USA
    • 1.5% pool fee plus a payout commission of 0.014XMR for exchange wallets, or 0.008XMR for normal wallets

We’ll be using MineXMR due to its lower fees and proximity advantages, minimizing latency. Here is a snapshot of the connection details we’ll use in MineXMR.

For configuration, I’ll use the server ‘ca.minexmr.com:5555’ with the appropriate port number.

    Monero Wallet Address

Next, input your wallet address or pool login if using services like Supernova. Check this for wallet setup guidance. After getting your wallet ID, enter it in the application. Skip the password by pressing enter. Note: MineXMR pool lacks TLS/SSL support, so choose ‘n’. Avoid using NiceHash or multiple pools at this stage (though setting up extra pools for auto-switching if one fails might be beneficial). Adjust any values later in the config file. Monero Guide Now, the program runs based on your installed GPUs. Use the bottom commands to check the miner’s status: press ‘h’ for hashrate, ‘r’ for hash results, and ‘c’ for pool connection verification.

If you plan on using your CPU for mining, you’ll need to configure the CPU file first. Open the generated 'cpu' document.

    Config File

In the CPU document, specify the CPU threads to deploy for mining. Using an FX-8150 AMD with 8 cores, I’ve included:

    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 1 },

    \"cpu_threads_conf\" :
    [
    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 2 },
    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 4 },
    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 5 },
    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 6 },
    { \"low_power_mode\" : false, \"no_prefetch\" : true, \"affine_to_cpu\" : 7 },
This uses CPUs 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7, leaving some free for other tasks. Optimizing CPU usage can be tricky, but adjust prefetch to false if needed. Once set up, restart the app and observe your hashrate increase using GPU and CPU. Verify this with OpenHardwareMonitor.
    ],

Congratulations! Your system is now set up for Monero mining with both CPU and GPU. If you encounter issues or need to adjust settings, the configuration file is your go-to.

Could you clarify what ‘minimum payout’ means?

    12. thegreatmineron January 25, 2018 9:26 am

      Hi,

      – Don’t close the app until you reach 0.5 XMR.

      Is it:
      – Is it true that cashing out is only possible at a minimum of 0.5 XMR?
      or
@thegreatminer, you can’t cash out below 0.5XMR. You can stop your miner, and data will still register on the pool (keep in mind that long inactivity can lead to some pools reclaiming your balance). MineXMR has a manual payout option for 0.004XMR for small fee withdrawals.

      Thank you for your answers.

      • Joshua Belleriveon January 25, 2018 2:43 pm

      Hello Every one,

I have a Windows server with an Intel Xeon E5-2670 processor and 260 GB of RAM. How should I configure the CPU threads for optimal performance?

Hello Raga, RAM size isn’t significant for XMR mining. I use XMR Stack on Ubuntu with a similar processor on UCS Blades.

      Thank you .

      • horaceon February 10, 2018 5:16 pm

Focus on cache memory; you've got 25MB. The rule of thumb is to allocate 2.5MB per thread, resulting in 10 threads with 20MB/2.5=10.

I installed VMware ESXi on the host, created a VM, and assigned 10 CPUs. If you have 10 cores, you get 20 vCPUs. Make sure to set CPU affinity to match your cores, using 1 vCPU per physical core.

After various configurations, I achieved 900 H/S per server with two physical CPUs, occasionally hitting 1.3 kH/S peaks.

New to crypto but with 11 years in web development. Can I mine on a dedicated server that permits it? How much could an Intel Xeon E5-1650 server yield? I know disk and RAM are irrelevant, though I’ve got 32GB DDR3 ECC RAM.
        regards !

Using MineXMR.com setup—no 'R' results yet, and dashboard and wallet ID show no accepted shares, plus 'Total Hash Rate 10M 0'. Where's the issue?

    16. Teunon March 1, 2018 4:35 pm

Results must be produced first. Like depositing money in a bank, it takes processing to show up. Initially, you’re at the teller.

      • The Kernelon April 21, 2018 1:22 pm

Wait 10 minutes for reading stats. If results lack after that, further research is needed. If pressing 'h' or 'c' gives positive outcomes, and not 'r', the likely cause is a low hashrate. Press 'h' for more precise averages over different intervals.

Other than 'yes!' in command lines, how do you know it's working? You hope to reach 0.5XRM on MoneroPool soon for wallet proof.

    17. Scotton March 19, 2018 11:58 pm

You'll notice hash acceptance with an active miner. Use ‘h’ for hashrate, ‘r’ for results, and ‘c’ for connection status. Just hit these keys to check on your screen.

This tutorial will take you through the necessary software you need and the steps to configure them to begin mining Monero in a matter of moments.

    24. Lazeron April 29, 2018 12:23 am

Here's a rundown of different methods available for Monero mining and the appropriate software for each:

      • Camentoson May 16, 2018 5:35 pm

XMR Stak involves a 2% developer fee unless you compile it yourself.

    25. Herberton May 28, 2018 1:23 pm

Wolf’s Miner comes with zero developer fees, although it's not as finely tuned.

      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : Mining coin: monero7
XMR Stak's recent update simplifies the process by providing a single installer that’s compatible with all hardware types. We'll focus on using XMR Stak here for its reliability and simplicity.
      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : WARNING: backend NVIDIA disabled.
Be aware that antivirus programs might flag mining software as malicious. To avoid any issues, always ensure you're downloading it from the legitimate website.
The latest XMR Stak version streamlines the setup process. We'll assume a Windows environment for this guide, but it also supports Linux and MacOS. Simply download the file, extract it, and start the executable.
Upon running the software, you'll need to choose whether to mine Monero or Aeon. We'll opt for Monero and then be prompted to enter a pool address. Joining a strong pool is key because solo mining often results in minimal to no rewards without a substantial hashrate. Pools usually charge a nominal fee for more consistent earnings. Here are some recommended pools for Monero:
      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : Starting 1x thread, affinity: 0.
      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : hwloc: memory pinned
      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : Starting 1x thread, affinity: 2.
A 1% pool fee coupled with a 0.015XMR payout commission.
      [2018-05-28 21:19:56] : hwloc: memory pinned
A 1% pool fee coupled with a 0.015XMR payout commission.
A 1.5% pool fee with a 0.014XMR payout commission for exchange wallets, or 0.008XMR for regular wallets.
This guide uses the MineXMR software due to its low fees and proximity of servers, which reduces latency. The image below illustrates the connection specifics we’ll input into the application.
      [2018-05-28 21:19:57] : Difficulty changed. Now: 1000225.

        Hi
I will input the desired server and port number into the app. For instance, I will use ‘ca.minexmr.com:5555’.
does anyone know what that is?

    26. chinedu mbonuon June 20, 2018 12:30 pm

Following this, you’ll input your wallet address (or a pool login for platforms like Supernova). Check this reference to set up your wallet. After acquiring your wallet ID, insert it into the app. Leave the password field blank by simply pressing enter. MineXMR does not support TLS/SSL, so select 'no' or 'n'. We won't be using NiceHash or multiple pools right now—though setting up additional pools with automatic switchover might be useful in case one becomes unavailable. You can always modify these settings later in the configuration file.
